There is a specific kind of session that only happens when you have been away. You get home, you are still carrying the week you just had, and instead of unpacking you take the board out. This is one of those: straight back from a trip to Alaska and onto glassy water while the light drops.

Why the evening ride works after time away

Nothing about this session is a test. The board is a LiftX on a Pro5 mast with a 160 Camber Pro and a 36 Glide, a combination described here as smooth and stable with enough carving control to stay interesting, aimed at relaxed cruising and long rides rather than pushing anything. That is the point. A setup you do not have to concentrate on is the one that lets a session do the job of clearing your head, and a flat lake at golden hour does the rest.

The track was recorded at First Avenue in 2012

The song is “Obligations are Chains” by Specific Ambiguity, in a live version recorded in 2012 at First Avenue in Minneapolis. A room with that much history in it puts something into a recording that a studio session does not get near, and it is audible in this one, crowd included. The subject matter is the reason it was paired with this footage: the idea that commitments and expectations quietly turn into chains unless you keep choosing otherwise, which lines up neatly with a ride taken specifically to shake a trip off.

Music Monday

This is the launch of the Music Monday slot, where a ride gets paired with an original track rather than commentary. If you are here for gear talk, the other episodes have plenty. This one is three minutes of water and a live band.
