The impact is hard enough and quick enough that the mast tears clean off the board. There is no warning and no way to read the water ahead at that speed, which is precisely why the story is worth telling: this is a failure mode that skill does not protect you from.
And it was not even his board
The board involved was a brand new Lift X worth around fourteen thousand dollars, and it was a demo unit entrusted by Lift rather than a personal board.
