Some lakes have hazards you can see. This one has a forest under the surface. It was a forty foot pond in the 1980s until nearby lakes were drained into it, and nobody cut the trees down first. Decades on, the cedars and oaks are still standing, still sturdy, still rooted, and still sitting just under the waterline. The safe route in and out is marked with buoys, and that same marked lane doubles as the time trials course.
The crash: a Lift 5 Pro mast on a Lift X
The setup that made this session exciting was a new discovery, that the Lift 5 Pro mast fits the Lift X, which gives you serious speed on an unusually light board. A visiting rider took that combination out, ended up outside the marked lane, and hit a submerged oak at around 26 mph. The sound from shore was like a surfboard belly flopping from a great height. He surfaced, waved his arms, rolled over and showed the underside of the board with the mast simply gone. Nobody was hurt, which mattered more here than usual, because the boards were not owned but entrusted for a review series, with promises attached to them.
The salvage dive and the actual damage
The local Lift dealer, Zen Watersports, runs a scuba side business, and a dive went down after the mast. It had not sunk to the bottom. It was still lodged in the tree that took it off, and it came back without a mark on it: connectors, bolts, prop and wings all intact. The board’s injury turned out to be one small grey plastic part that sits over the sliding mechanism that locks the mast into place. A replacement was ordered through the dealer, it arrived, it went on, and the board worked normally again.
Engineered to break exactly there
The most interesting part came months later, over dinner in Puerto Rico with Lift’s Nick. Shown a photograph of the aftermath, his reaction was recognition rather than alarm: the mast is meant to release at that spot, with minimum damage to expensive parts. What looked like a catastrophe was the design doing its job. That is a useful thing to understand as an owner, because a mast that separates on impact is not a mast that failed.
Why the rider walked away
The comparison drawn at the end is with the earlier bolt-in mast generations. Hit a solid trunk at that speed on a board where the mast is bolted through, and something has to give: the mast cracks, or the bottom of the board tears out, and the rider is pitched forward hard enough that his head arrives at the tree next. Here the mast let go, the rider kept going forward and landed over the top of the board without even coming off it. Take from this what you can control, which is knowing where the hazards in your water actually are, and staying inside the markers when someone tells you where the safe lane runs.
