It is the first question almost everyone asks before they book a lesson or spend the money. The answer that gets given online is usually a number pulled from nowhere. This episode answers it differently, by following one new rider across a single summer and letting the progress speak.
Start with a lesson, then get your own board
Leo, a neighbour, began the way most people should: with a lesson, taken with Beth at Zen Water Sports. That was enough to convince him, and he bought a board straight afterwards rather than renting his way into the sport. The setup is a brand new Lift3 F Sport with a 200 Surf V2 front wing and the Lift jet propulsion system, which is a sensible beginner package. A larger front wing produces lift at lower speed, which is exactly what you want while you are still learning to stand up and hold a line.
Progress comes from riding regularly
The rest of the summer is the actual answer to the question. Riding together regularly, week after week, is what turns a first lesson into real competence, and the footage across the season shows that curve rather than describing it. If you are wondering whether you will pick it up, the useful framing is not how many minutes it takes to stand up once, it is how many sessions you can get in before the water gets cold.
The upgrade every new rider eventually wants
By the end of the summer there was only one thing on the wish list: a taller mast. That is a familiar pattern. Once you stop falling constantly and start riding higher, a short mast becomes the thing limiting you, because breaching gets more likely the closer the wing sits to the surface. It is a good sign when it is the first thing a new rider asks for.
