The question that keeps coming up about the LiftX is whether it works behind a boat, and specifically whether you need the high mount to surf a wake on one. It is a hard thing to answer on a quiet lake with no wake boat traffic, so this episode borrows footage shot elsewhere to settle it.
What the footage shows
Devin from Wake Thief rides a LiftX on the low mount directly behind a boat, and he surfs it. The detail worth watching for is his left hand: when the controller is in it, he is riding unpowered, which he does frequently. When he does drop off the wave, he pumps back into the wake and picks the pocket up again. That is wake surfing in the proper sense, using the boat’s energy rather than the motor, with the foil doing what a foil does between waves.
Low mount or high mount
The conclusion drawn from it is the interesting part. The opinion circulating in the community, and supported by what is on screen here, is that the low mount is low friction enough that the high mount is not necessary for this. If you have been holding off on trying it because you assumed a mount change was required first, that assumption is worth revisiting.
Where the footage came from
None of this was filmed at home. It comes from a Puerto Rico trip, shot by Tom, with Devin riding, and it is shared here as a collaboration rather than as original footage. The establishing shots at the top were recorded closer to home on an Insta360 X5 on a selfie stick mounted to the bow of a kayak, while a giant slalom race course was being set out for the 2026 season.
