Lift’s high modulus 32 inch mast arrived with one headline number attached to it: 40% stiffer than the standard carbon mast. That is a strange thing to sell, because almost nobody finishes a session wishing their mast had less flex in it. This episode works through the obvious question in order. Fit it, ride it, and find out whether the stiffness is something a rider can actually feel.
Fitting it, and the first ride that proved nothing
The swap is undramatic. A few bolts, the wires, the coolant lines snapping back together, and the board is ready. There is no obvious weight change and nothing about the build suggests corners were cut. Then comes the first ride, on the Surf V2 100 front wing with the 32 Glide stabiliser, and the verdict is blunt: no detectable difference. Solid, well made, and completely indistinguishable from the mast it replaced. At that point it reads as a fix for a problem nobody had, and the point is made that there are more useful things Lift could have solved first, including the cutout issue this channel calls Lift Faceplant Syndrome.
The wing you pair it with is what makes the mast visible
The insight that saves the review is that the first test used a very stiff wing. The Surf V2 100 is small and thick, with barely any flex of its own, so a stiffer mast underneath it changes almost nothing in the system. Lift is a surf company at heart, so the theory goes that this mast was built for the wings surfers actually use. The test gets rerun on a borrowed high aspect 90, wide and thin and comparatively flexible, and that is where the episode turns. The mast becomes remarkably communicative: cutting through another rider’s wake registers as a distinct thud travelling up into the board, more clearly than any previous setup transmitted it. The comparison offered is an insect with long antennae. Someone who had never enjoyed high aspect wings on a lake was riding this one properly within five minutes and having a good time on it.
Why high aspect wings usually make no sense on a lake
The episode also explains, at length, why these wings are normally the wrong call in flat fresh water. Spreading the same area out across a very wide span pays off on a vertical or near vertical wave face, because more of the wing stays buried in the wall. On flat water it works against you. The moment you bank hard, a wide span lifts more of the wing towards the surface and out of clean water, which is exactly the opposite of what you want mid carve.
So should you buy it?
Not as an upgrade to an existing 32 inch mast. The old 32 appears to be discontinued, so new boards come with this one anyway, and swapping a last generation mast for it is money that would do more work elsewhere. Buy it if you ride surf, or if you ride flexible wings and want the feedback. One other observation gets flagged as slight but real: on the Camber Pro, deliberately risky edge burying carves kept coming back rather than washing out, which reads as a little more control over the wing under the water. Mast length still matters more than mast stiffness, and the argument for the tallest mast you can get is repeated here without hedging.
