There is a reflex among experienced riders to push everyone towards the Pro board, on the grounds that it is lighter, smaller and more nimble. It is also the wrong advice for a lot of people. This episode is a family session that ends up making that point better than any spec sheet could.
Buying for the riding you will actually do
The rider here chose a Sport board over a Pro board, against the usual advice, because her goal was to get on the water and hang out with friends. She spends about as much time lying on the board as she does surfing it. Judged against what she wanted, that is not a compromise, it is the correct board. If your sessions are social and unhurried rather than performance driven, the bigger, more forgiving platform is the one that gets used.
More than one way to ride an eFoil
The session itself works through different ways to ride: standing and surfing, but also lying down and even sitting on the board while it flies, which looks a lot like a magic carpet moving over the water. That range is easy to forget if you only ever ride one way, and it is a reasonable answer to anyone who thinks an eFoil is a single trick.
Thirty minutes cut down to a music piece
The ride ran about half an hour and was edited into a music video rather than a talking episode, set to 5th Projekt’s cover of Radiohead’s Burn the Witch. Regular viewers will have noticed the season leaning on different versions of that song, and there is a reason behind it that gets held back until the end of the summer. Watch it for the riding and for the reminder that the best board is the one that matches the rider.
