The thing that puts most people off booking a first eFoil session is a guess about how long they will spend falling in before anything good happens. This episode answers that by watching three riders at three different points on the same curve, on the same lake, in the same conditions.

A first ever session, start to flight

Maddy has never done this before. Her segment runs from the first ride, through the moment she gets to her feet, to foiling roughly ten minutes in. No prior surf or board experience is involved. If you want a realistic answer to how long it takes to leave the water for the first time, her session is the one to watch, because nothing is skipped between the start and the flight.

Five sessions in: control, speed, then a gear change

Brenna is five sessions into the sport. She starts on her knees, working on control rather than speed, then builds up pace and confidence standing. There is a splash recovery in there too, handled calmly, which is worth seeing because falling is a normal part of every session at this stage. By the end of her segment she has moved onto a Lift3 Pro.

Twenty-one sessions: carving and touch-and-gos

Olivia has twenty-one sessions behind her, and the difference shows in what she is practising rather than in how hard she is trying. She rides the Camber Pro, works touch-and-gos on the 32 Glide, and spends time dialling in balance on the Lift3 Sport. Touch-and-gos are the useful marker here: settling the board back onto the surface and lifting off again on purpose means you are controlling the foil, not just surviving it.

Why the curve is shorter than it looks

Watching all three in one episode makes the shape of the progression obvious. Standing comes quickly, flight follows soon after, and everything past that is refinement rather than struggle. No board sport background is required to start, which is the point being made across all three riders.
