The remote is the only interface an eFoil gives you. Everything you know about the board while you are riding it arrives through that one screen in your hand. Plenty of riders on a Lift3 or Lift4 stayed on the standard remote rather than pay the extra for the Elite, but it is the standard controller on the Lift 5 Pro and the Lift X, so anyone upgrading now gets one whether they wanted it or not. This is a long, unvarnished look at what it does well and where it falls short.

Battery life and the basics that work

The battery question finally has an answer: the ride log showed 28 rides completed before the controller put up its low battery symbol, and it was charged at that point rather than run flat to see what happens. The screen itself is a genuine strength, easy to read even through polarised sunglasses. Syncing is quick, with the board flashing blue and the controller answering with a tone and a tick. The main screen gives you virtual gear, speed, board battery and controller battery, and for most of a session that is all you actually want.

A dashboard that needs a manual

Press through the cycle and the controller will show you controller battery percentage, battery temperature, ESC temperature, signal strength, amps drawn while the trigger is held, prop RPM, and a screen combining a distance figure with symbols that are anyone’s guess. The complaint here is not that the data exists, it is that the icons do not explain themselves. The comparison drawn is a rental car: you sit down in an unfamiliar dashboard and read it instantly, without opening a manual, because speed, revs and fuel are shown in ways everybody already understands. An odometer should look like an odometer. There is also a sensible request attached: diagnostics like amps are almost impossible to watch while riding, so they should be recorded to review later rather than displayed live.

Lag, and buttons that do not always take

The interface problems are the real frustration. Button presses need repeating before they register, menus take their time, and a brightness setting picked at full appeared to dim itself again on the way out of the menu. None of that looks like a hardware limit, given how simple the graphics on this screen are, which is why it reads as something a software update should be able to fix. There is one specific design trap worth knowing about: because checking your remaining charge means holding the button, holding it slightly too long powers the board on or off by accident. The suggested fix is the convention drones and e-bike components already use. One press to read the gauge for as long as you like, then press and hold to change the power state.

The part that worries a long term owner

Durability is the open question. The buttons sit under waterproof rubber pads with small switches beneath, and the concern raised is that a frustrating, unresponsive button invites you to dig a thumbnail into that rubber. Other gear owned here has failed exactly that way, which is tolerable on a cheap device and much less so on a thousand dollar controller. The episode closes on the board features that ended up winning the rider over anyway: the snap in battery, mast and wings, which turned out to be more useful than expected, the handles now used automatically every time, and a plea for a positive stop or an audible warning so nobody removes a battery before shutting the board down properly.
