The promised full review of the Lift4 Pro never appeared, and this episode explains why. Recorded on one of the last rideable days of a Minnesota season, it is part fault finding, part reflection on where eFoiling and eFoil racing are actually going.
What the plug warning really means
A season of racing, running the board flat out on straightaways for longer than most riders ever do, started producing overheat warnings. The board calls it a plug warning, which is a badly chosen name, because riders assume it means a blocked coolant line. It does not. It means the three wires going into the speed controller are getting too hot, usually because there is resistance in the connection, and the usual cure is cleaning and oiling the connectors. That was already happening here roughly every third or fourth ride. Rather than report the fault straight away and get a box of parts that might not be the problem, the approach was to keep riding and keep investigating, including checking the connectors with a thermal camera. The answer turned up during a careful clean: laid out together instead of one at a time, one plug was clearly missing a small back piece that all the others had. Whether it shipped that way or fell off at some point is unclear.
Do not remove the shroud on the standard prop
The other discovery is one riders should know before spending money. The Lift Connect System is a genuine improvement and reduces friction enough to be worth retrofitting to older boards. The nose piece sold as a way to run the standard prop without its shroud, however, does not work as advertised. With the shroud removed from a standard prop, power and torque collapse. Heavier riders could not get out of the water at all. Refit the shroud and the power comes straight back. That result repeated across three different boards, so whatever the explanation, the effect is real. It does not apply to the LCS setup, which is the one worth running with the shroud off.
Throttle control is what wins races
On the racing side, the argument here is not about raw power but about how finely you can meter it. Think of throttle throw like the travel in a car’s accelerator pedal. A long throw gives you an analogue feel and lets you feather speed into a turn, hold the carve and drive out of it under control. A very short throw pushes you toward all or nothing, which is easier for a beginner and much harder to race with, and it shows in riders who hop the board to get over the hump instead of carrying speed through. Virtual gearing matters too, and the practical point is that a race is no place to adjust it. Set it before you start, because anyone fiddling with settings mid course is not winning.
Three boards, three faults, and a market that is not growing fast
Honesty about the hardware cuts both ways. This is the third Lift board owned here and each one has had an issue, so the early adopter phase is not over. Support has been fast and generous with parts, often shipping whole assemblies rather than components. The bigger disappointment is uptake. After three seasons only one other person on the lake bought a board, with cost given as the reason, which sits oddly next to what people happily spend on wake boats and their accessories. An eFoil is not a cheap beach toy, it is a precisely engineered flying craft, and that is the case this episode makes.
