How to pick an eFoil wing size for your weight and riding style

Buying an eFoil is mostly presented as a board decision, when in practice the front wing and your body weight decide almost everything about how the thing behaves. This episode is a testing debrief between two riders of very different weights who have been swapping the same wings between a larger sport board and a smaller pro board, and the differences they report are not subtle.

Wing size, board size and getting up out of the water

The test set here is a 200 Surf, a 150 Surf and a Camber Pro 160, ridden across both boards. The pattern that comes out is that getting up is a different problem from riding once you are up. On the larger white sport board, the 200 came up every time, and the 150 was reported as much easier to plane out than the same rider’s attempt at the 200 on the smaller black pro board. Once flying, though, the larger board with the smaller wing and the smaller board with the bigger wing felt close in cornering, which is worth knowing before you assume you need the smaller board to get a nimble ride.

Why a Camber Pro turns differently from a Surf wing

The most useful part of the conversation is the description of feel. A Surf wing responds to almost nothing: a small shift up top and the board is already banking, described as behaving like a sports car or a pair of race skis. The Camber Pro will not do that. It pushes back, and you have to genuinely set your weight into it before it commits to the carve, then mean it again to bring it back level. It is stable in a way that also reads as stiff. It also produces a lot of drag alongside a lot of lift, which makes it feel slower than it is: the watch says a higher speed than the sensation suggests. And the 160 is the smallest Camber there is, so for a heavier rider it is a very different wing from what a lighter rider experiences on the same part.

Battery figures that do not survive contact with real riding

Battery claims come up next, and the conclusion is that manufacturer numbers do not describe how these boards get used. Actual run time landed near the prediction, in the region of three quarters of an hour to fully dead, which is not a state anyone sensible rides into. Stranger still, easy days seem to give less time, not more. The theory offered is that time is the wrong unit and distance is the right one, because hard carving is not free: every turn is effectively braking, dumping speed and creating drag several times a minute. If you ride to carve rather than to cruise, your range will never match the brochure.

Motor noise, warranty replacements and root cause

The last section is about a mast and motor that are simply too loud, noticeably worse than a newer generation board that runs close to silent underfoot. Parts were replaced under warranty, quickly and without argument, and the noise stayed. The frustration expressed is not about the service, which was fast, but about the lack of interest in finding the actual cause. The suspicion raised is the speed controller rather than the motor itself, based on how much quieter the newer board is. If you are buying, this is the argument for weighing a company’s willingness to solve a problem as heavily as any spec on the page.
