The Marshal runs the course all out. Enter up to three. The median is used, not the fastest.
Race camera
Point the camera at the start/finish gate, then line the green marker up on it. Re-align any time the camera is moved or knocked.
Timing method
Auto gate
Point the camera at the gate, then tap Set gate and tap your two buoys on the picture. Everything else is worked out from those two points: where to watch, which way is a start, and how tall a rider has to be to be riding rather than paddling.
Uses the lens as far as it goes, then crops. More pixels on the rider is always better, but you do not need them to fill the frame: sizes are measured against your own gate, not against the picture. Changing this means setting the gate again.
The setup steps are spoken as well as written. Which voices are offered is up to the phone, and an iPhone with the ringer switch off will not speak at all, which is why every line is on screen too.
Camera off.
A phone camera keeps adjusting its own exposure, white balance and focus, and to the detector every one of those adjustments looks exactly like the water changing. This freezes them. It happens by itself when you turn the camera on and again when you set the gate, so you only need this button if you have moved the tripod or the light has changed a lot.
On an iPhone the ringer switch has to be on, or the browser plays nothing.
Test it on a video
Run a recording through the real detector, the same code the camera uses, and see every crossing it finds before anybody gets wet. Set the gate first on a frame from the same camera position.
Use real time. The detector reads whatever frames arrive while the clock runs, so playing a recording faster simply hands it fewer of them and it misses crossings that it would catch on the water. Measured on twelve minutes of lake footage: eleven crossings out of eleven at real time, seven out of eleven at 4x. The faster settings are for skimming to find a moment, never for judging whether the detector works.
